about

‘Last Days of California’ is the third single by Harrison Scarecrow, released world-wide via UK indie Integrity Records on 22nd October 2021.

The single was inspired by the late-night conversations of vagrants and alley dwellers behind a liquor store, overheard by the band’s vocalist Ryan as he lay sleepless in his apartment with the window open in the steamy LA summer.

Mixed by New York’s Rich Pagano (Fab Faux, Robbie Robertson, Bob Dylan) & mastered by Duncan Chave at Sound Gallery Studio in Exeter (UK), the track oozes Harrison Scarecrow’s characteristic widescreen indie-noir. Of the lyrical inspiration, Ryan explains:

“I lived on the second floor of an apartment building behind Jr.'s Market & Liquor in LA. There was no air conditioning so in the summer I'd sleep with the windows open and could hear all the goings-on in the alley behind Jr.'s. Vagrants would gather there to drink and chat, telling stories about their past and discussing hopes for the future. The song references the last days of youth, of promise, and of hopes when you’re ‘too old to dream what a young man dreams’.”

Influenced by the likes of Conor Oberst, Springsteen and fellow Alabama native Jason Isbell, Harrison Scarecrow move effortlessly from sparse piano & vocal pieces to full band sounds with a driving rhythm section that could have dropped straight out of a New York indie club. Their debut album is scheduled for the spring of 2022.

LYRICS

Stood in the alley, by the East Side Liquor
Between the dumpster and, the pouring rain
Got so tired of tryin’, to hold it all together
Coming apart, is like rust on the chain

The last days of California

Heathens in the nightland, call out just like my good-time friends
“Hey, man”, the ground around is caving in
Every place I go, looks like the same place I’ve been
It’s hard to get anywhere

The last days of California
(oh oh oh)
The last days of California
(oh oh oh)

It’s hard to shake that feeling, when it’s time for you to leave
Too old to dream what a young man dreams

The last days of California
(oh oh oh)
The last days of California
(oh oh oh)
The last days of California
